About — 700 Valencia St, San Francisco

Not a firm that ghosts you after April — a small shop that shows up on the 8th, every month.

Basalt Ledger is a two-person bookkeeping practice on Valencia Street. We keep the books current, run payroll on time, and hand your CPA a packet that ties out — so nothing about your money is a surprise.

01 / How we got here

Basalt started with one bad tax season.

We spent years watching founders and freelancers open a finance app in a panic every March, scroll a wall of uncategorized transactions, and quietly hope for the best. That's not a workflow — that's a stress test.

So we built the opposite: real books, closed on a predictable schedule, in the software you already use. No forced migrations, no jargon dumps, no invoice that surprises you more than the IRS would. Just steady, tied-out numbers you can actually make decisions on.

We keep the client list small on purpose. The two of us do the work end to end, which is how a set of books stays consistent month after month instead of getting reinterpreted by whoever's free that week.

02 / What we hold to

Standards we won't quietly drop when it gets busy.

Think of these as the debits and credits of how we operate — non-negotiable entries, posted every month.

Entry 01

Closed on a calendar, not a whim

Every month is reconciled and closed by the eighth business day. Your numbers reflect last month — never a vague “sometime this quarter.”

Entry 02

Plain language over accounting theater

Statements come with a two-line human summary of what moved and why. If you need a glossary to read your own P&L, we did our job wrong.

Entry 03

The price is the price

One flat number per engagement, agreed before we start. No hourly meter ticking while you email over a receipt, no mystery line items at year-end.

Entry 04

Your stack, not ours

QuickBooks, Xero, Wave — we work in what you already run. We'd rather fit your business than make you re-learn a tool to fit us.

Entry 05

Tax season is pre-packed

Come April your CPA gets a clean, tied-out packet — 1099s, year-end statements, the works — so nobody's rebuilding a year at 2 a.m.

The people, not the persona

Two sets of eyes on every set of books.

No account gets handed off to whoever's free. The same two of us categorize, reconcile, and review your numbers month after month — which is exactly why they stay consistent and why a weird transaction actually gets noticed.

We keep the roster small so we can stay close to each client's rhythm: when your invoices spike, when payroll grows, when a slow month needs a heads-up before it becomes a problem.
